RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
Give Them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids With the Love of Jesus | Elyse M. Fitzpatrick & Jessica Thompson – “All of us want to raise good kids. And we want to be good parents. But what exactly do we mean by “good?” And is “being good” really the point? Mother-daughter team Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson contend that every way we try to make our kids “good” is simply an extension of Old Testament Law—a set of standards that is not only unable to save our children, but also powerless to change them. No, rules are not the answer. What they need is GRACE. We must tell our kids of the grace-giving God who freely adopts rebels and transforms them into loving sons and daughters. If this is not the message your children hear, if you are just telling them to “be good,” then the gospel needs to transform your parenting too. Give Them Grace is a revolutionary perspective on parenting that shows us how to receive the gospel afresh and give grace in abundance, helping our children know the dazzling love of Jesus and respond with heartfelt obedience.”
Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in Your Home | Gloria Furman – Where is God in the daily and often mundane work of a mother? “Does he care about the way we unload the dishwasher or balance the budget? Do the little things like changing diapers or cooking meals make a difference? And how can we use our spheres of influence for God’s glory and our joy? Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a working woman splitting time between the office and home, Gloria Furman—writer, pastor’s wife, cross-cultural worker, and mom—encourages us to see the reality of God’s grace in all of life, especially those areas that often appear to be boring and unimportant. Using personal examples and insightful stories, her richly theological reflections help us experience the gospel’s extraordinary power to transform our ordinary lives.”
Shepherding a Child’s Heart | Tedd Tripp – Written for parents with children of any age, this insightful book provides perspectives and procedures for shepherding your child’s heart into the paths of life. Shepherding a Child’s Heart gives fresh biblical approaches to child rearing. About this book, Pastor John MacArthur says, “With the plethora of material on parenting and the family, it is inspiring-and distressing-to see how few books are genuinely biblical. Here is a refreshing exception. Tedd Tripp offers solid, trustworthy, biblical help for parents. If you are looking for the right perspective, and practical help, you won’t find a more excellent guide.”
The Faithful Parent | Martha Peace & Stuart Scott – “Parents and children need help from the One who is perfect, who understands our need, and who can really help us — God himself. Because of that, the most important relationship in your family is your relationship with him. That’s the relationship The Faithful Parent emphasizes. Martha Peace, bestselling author of The Excellent Wife, and Stuart Scott, author of its counterpart, The Exemplary Husband, join forces to challenge you to become a faithful parent — one who perseveres and leaves the results to God.”
Big Truths for Little Hearts: Teaching and Learning the Greatness of God | Bruce Ware – “Equips parents to guide their young children through all major doctrines in an understandable, chapter-a-day format. C.J. Mahaney says, “Imagine a respected theologian devoting himself to training a new generation of pastors and scholars in the seminary classroom. Now imagine him driving home at night to teach that profound theology in simple terms to his children at their bedsides. Now imagine this father compiling those bedside conversations into a book available to all pastors, parents, and children alike. Imagine no more. My friend Dr. Bruce Ware has done it.”
Gospel-Powered Parenting: How the Gospel Shapes and Transforms Parenting | William Farley – “Claiming the gospel as their own has an enormous effect on parents’ marriage, their integrity, and their love for their children. Keeping the gospel at the forefront of every aspect of marriage helps parents fear God, sensitizes them to sin, motivates them to enter their children’s world, and causes them to preach the beauty of the gospel to their children through their marriage.” “”Gospel-Powered Parenting is a wise, enduring prescription for parenting because it is joyously biblical and comes from a pastor-theologian who has done it — as his family wonderfully attests.” –R. Kent Hughes, Senior Pastor Emeritus, College Church, Wheaton
Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens | Paul David Tripp – This book offers a wealth of biblical wisdom and a trasyre of practical steps for understanding and shepherding your teen’s heart. “Are you hoping to merely survive your teenagers? With compassion, wit, and wisdom, Tripp uncovers the heart issues affecting families during the often-chaotic adolescent years.”
Instructing a Child’s Heart | Tedd & Margy Tripp – “From interaction with their peers to the instruction and correction that they receive at home, Children interpret their experience from a worldview that seeks to answer their fundamental questions: Who am I? What do I exist for? Where can I find joy? We need to provide our children with a consistent, persuasive, biblical framework for understanding the world God has made and their place in it. Instructing a Child’s Heart is essential to Shepherding a Child’s Heart. The instruction that you provide for them not only informs their mind; it is directed to persuading their hearts of the wisdom and truthfulness of God s ways. Impress truth on the hearts of your children, not to control or manage them, but to point them to the greatest joy and happiness that they can experience delighting in God and the goodness of his ways.”
Two Ways to Live – Two Ways to Live is an online version of a gospel presentation put together by Matthias Media. This is the same gospel tract our leaders are trained to use with our students in order to present the good news of Jesus in a clear and concise way. In six points, Two Ways shows how our gracious, Creator God has supplied a means of averting His wrath against sinners and obtaining His affection by the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. Loaded with pictures and verses, this is well worth 5 minutes of your time.

NIV Life Application Study Bible – The NIV Life Application Study Bible is a fantastic resource for believers, especially our middle schoolers! The NIV translation reads smoothly and is very helpful in growing the understanding of God’s Word for young believers. Furthermore, the extra notes and introduction articles are excellently written and have extremely valuable and insightful commentary that will help our young believers apply God’s Word to their lives today.
ESV Study Bible – The ESV study Bible is hands down the best study Bible there is out right now. In combining the best and most recent evangelical Christian scholarship it is the most comprehensive study Bible ever published—with 2,752 pages of extensive, accessible Bible resources. GREAT BOOKS FOR STUDENTS
Christianity Explored | Rico Tice & Barry Cooper – “The Christianity Explored paperback book, written by UK Evangelist Rico Tice and Barry Cooper, is a jargon-free introduction to Jesus Christ. Drawing from the book of Mark in the Bible the book explores who Jesus was, what his aims were, and what it means to follow him. Concise, entertaining and honest, it’s an ideal book for anyone with little or no experience of Christianity.”
How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens: A Guide to Christ-Focused Reading of Scripture | Michael Williams – We often tell our students, “The Bible is all about Jesus!” This book helps them see how! “Many Christians today experience Bible teaching in isolated, unconnected pieces, receiving little or no guidance into how these pieces form a coherent picture in Christ. How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens presents Christ as the central focus of each biblical book and the primary way the Bible relates to contemporary circumstances. Each book of the Bible has an identifiable theme ultimately fulfilled in the person and work of Christ…By demonstrating how each theme relates to living the Christian life, this book promises to be an invaluable guide for reading and understanding the Bible.”
Jesus Freaks: Stories of Those Who Stood for Jesus | D.C. Talk – “This Gold Medallion-nominated book opens the eyes of a new generation to the persecution of Christians around the world. Created by dc Talk and The Voice of the Martyrs, Jesus Freaks is a companion volume to dc Talk’s album of the same name. It’s a wake-up call to prayer and to lives of unashamed faith, offering stories of martyrs past and present. The book was written especially for teenagers.”
Life’s Biggest Questions | Erik Thoennes – People have called us crazy for recommending this as a book for our middle schoolers to have, but we are confident that Life’s Biggest Questions will be a rich resource for our students growth in Jesus & joy in Him. Rich in content, very simple in word, packed with application/discussion questions & memory verses, this book covers how the Bible answers life’s biggest questions & will bless our students with the beauty of their God.
Basic Christianity | John Stott – In 2006, Christianity Today voted this title to be one of the top 50 books that have shaped evangelicals! Who is Jesus? “If Jesus was not God in human flesh, Christianity is exploded,” writes John Stott. “We are left with just another religion with some beautiful ideas and noble ethics; its unique distinction has gone.” If Jesus is not who he said he was, and if he did not do what he said he had come to do, all of Christianity crumbles to the ground.
Twenty Christian Beliefs | Wayne Grudem – This book is Christian essentials made plain and simple. God doesn’t call every Christian to go off to seminary, but there are certain matters of teaching that every Christian simply must know. Theology is important because what we believe affects how we live. If you’re a relatively new believer in Jesus, or if you’re a more mature Christian looking for a quick brush-up on basics of the faith, Christian Beliefs is for you.
