New Teaching Series… I Love You

THE CONFUSION OF MIDDLE SCHOOL RELATIONSHIPS

Middle school was mostly confusing for me. There were so many things that changed when I got into middle school that I had a hard time getting my head around what was going on. I had a whole new school, a new set of teachers, new subjects and to top it all off I began to feel new things about the ladies. What I mean is, I no longer wanted to ignore them and go play basketball. In fact, I couldn’t ignore them if I tried!

I vividly remember how my ‘dating’ relationships would turn out in middle school. I would find a girl who was attractive looking and try and make her like me. Once I knew she ‘liked’ me, I would then proceed to ask her to be my girlfriend. Once she said yes, we would be boyfriend and girlfriend. What did that look like? It looked like me avoiding her like the plague until we broke up a couple days later. Why? Because I had no idea what to do with a girlfriend. All I knew is I was attracted to girls, everything else beyond that was mystery. Should I avoid them? Should I chase after them? If I caught one, what was I suppose to do next? The truth was, I needed help, but sadly, there was no one to help me. I was alone with these new feelings. No guide. No teacher. Just confusion…

I had no idea what to do with a girlfriend. All I knew is I was attracted to girls, everything else beyond that was mystery.

Sadly, I am not the only one who has experienced this. In fact, I would say the majority of middle schoolers have this very same problem. What is the problem? The problem is having very new, very strange and very strong feelings for members of the opposite sex, yet having no idea of what to do with them. It gets even harder for Christians and when you want to honor Jesus in all you do. Non-believers are often ok with not knowing exactly what to do and to just imitate how the rest of the kids at school are dealing with the problem. But for Christians, that won’t do. We want to honor the our Lord who purchased our forgiveness and freedom with His precious blood. How we treat members of the opposite sex must be according to our Master’s desires. So how do we navigate through the waters of relationships in a way that pleases our Lord?

Don’t, worry, We want to help.

Beginning April 18, The Ride will be started a short series on relationships called, “I Love You.” We will be looking at the Bible’s idea of love (what it means and how it looks) and then we will apply it to relationships the plight middle schoolers find themselves in. I encourage you to join us for this short three-week series and learn for yourself how to honor Jesus and grow in wisdom during in these mysterious times of new and confusing feelings.
